Cranial Osteopathy

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy is a very refined and gentle approach to the treatment of the whole body – not just the head. It is a specialised field within osteopathy that is studied predominantly at post-graduate level. Cranial osteopaths use a highly developed sense of touch to feel subtle changes of tension and tissue quality throughout the entire body in order to diagnose areas of strain or dysfunction.  Past accidents or injuries are often revealed to the osteopath as patterns of tension or strain which the patient may be unaware of but which may be influencing their present condition.  Gentle but focused support is offered to specific tissues in order that tension can be released and a sense of balance and greater level of health restored.

The gentle, supportive nature of this type of approach is particularly suitable in the treatment of babies, children and women during pregnancy. It is also extremely useful in very painful conditions such as acute low back or neck pain.

What Does Cranial Treatment Feel Like?

During treatment patients may be aware of different sensations, such as pressure or warmth. Most become deeply relaxed, and feel that tension is gradually being drawn out of their body. As well as an improvement in symptoms, patients often report increased levels of energy, better sleep patterns, and an enhanced sense of overall well being.
